The monument is a work created with the participation of famous architects of the 19th century, namely E.O. Vasiliev (1779-1833), B.S. Pokrovsky (1836-1903) and probably V.Kh. Nemkin (1857-1908). Currently, the building houses the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture.

Description of the building

The main facades of the buildings of the Academy of Culture, facing the street, are made in a single style and combined by a single compositional solution using a saber-shaped structure, both in individual elements and in the formation of the ensemble as a whole.

The general style of the main facade is made in a combination of different stylistic techniques with the use of elements made in the "Russian-Byzantine style" as stylistic accents.

Interesting Facts

During the first half of the 19th century. (until the middle of the 19th century) the building, along with the buildings of the academy and the bishop's house, was considered one of the outstanding buildings of Kharkiv. In the middle of the 19th century it was still considered "significant" (insigne) according to Pitra.

In the second half of the 19th century. capital reconstruction of the school building was completed. The main entrance to the building has been arranged from the side of Bursatsky Uzvoz, and the main facade has been redecorated while retaining fragments of the original solution. Above the central part is redesigned in the Byzantine style. In 1898-1899, the building was completed.

After 1920, the buildings of the former seminary housed a library institute, university faculties, and in 1941-1946, a conservatory. In 1947, the monument housed a library institute again, which in 1964 was reorganized into the Kharkiv Institute of Culture, on the basis of which the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture was established in 1998.

Destruction

The building of the academy was partially destroyed as a result of the blast wave during the shelling of the center of Kharkiv in early March. The glazing of the window openings of the main facade was damaged.
