Description of monument
Hostinniy Dvir was built at the beginning of the 19th century on Kontraktova Ploshcha in Kyiv as a trading store, in the 20s of the 20th century the building began to be rebuilt and its original architectural appearance was lost. In the 70s, the building was completely demolished and a new one was built on the old foundation, which can still be seen today.
Until May 2012, the building was occupied by numerous public institutions: the state scientific research "Ukrproyektrestavratsiya", scientific architectural and construction library named after Zabolotny , the Kyiv Academic Drama Theater on Podil, etc. In August 2011, the Guest House was excluded from the list of architectural monuments, and already in April 2012, the Kyiv City Council allowed the reconstruction of the building into a commercial and office center. This caused public indignation and protests in Gostinny Dvor with the demand to return the building to the status of an architectural monument.
In 2018, the building returned to state ownership. Currently, the Hostynnyi Dvir is a monument of urban planning and architecture of national importance (2015), a monument of architecture and urban planning of local importance (2014) and the central element of the monument of architecture and urban planning of local importance "Complex of buildings of Kontraktova Ploshcha, 10th - end of the 19th century" (2012).
In January 2021, the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Oleksandr Tkachenko, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, in which he asked to transfer the Hostynnyi Dvir to his administration in order to create a museum of modern art there. The minister assured that such a decision will preserve the monument of architecture and urban planning: it will be possible to restore it within the framework of the "Great Restoration" project.
On February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, due to which the restoration project was forcibly suspended.
